Beloit Domestic Violence Center

What can I do if I'm being abused?

  1. If you, or someone else, is in danger, call 911.

  2. Call the BDVC Crisis Line for support and information.

  3. Get medical attention if you or someone else is hurt.  Tell the doctor how the injury occurred and ask that it be documented.

  4. Have someone take pictures of the injuries and date them.

  5. A Domestic Violence Restraining Order is free and is available through BDVC or your community courthouse.

  6. Make a "Safety Plan."  Include a safe place to call or go for yourself and your children.  Pack and hide a bag with money, identification, important papers, extra keys, clothing and medication.

  7. Talk with someone safe and supportive.

Facts on Domestic Violence

Battering is the single largest cause of injury to women in the United States...more than mugging, automobile accidents and rapes.

Thirty-five percent of women seen in Emergency Rooms are seen for injuries from battering.  Each year more than one million women seek treatment for injuries inflicted by husbands, boyfriends, partner or an "ex".

More than thirty percent of all women will experience some form of violence from their partners during their lifetime.

Domestic Violence affects a person's right to safety, shelter, food, clothing, education, work, family and friends, support, self-esteem, and their very soul.  Despair and depression deepen the tragedy of the cycle.  Children also learn the cycle.  Children from homes effected by domestic violence are being abused at a rate fifteen hundred times higher than the National average.
